He was, by any measure, a man overwhelmed with external demands. And yet, in the Meditations, he returns again and again to a single preoccupation: what he chooses to give his attention to. Not what the crowd demands. Not what generates applause. What he, in his own judgment, determines is worthy of his inner life.

Not because he disdained the world. Because he understood what it means to let the world inside your head without your permission.


Principle One: The Discipline of Assent

Epictetus, the former slave whose lectures shaped Marcus's thinking, taught that between every external event and your response to it lies a moment of choice. He called this prohairesis — the faculty of judgment, the one thing that remains entirely yours. A notification arrives. A post underperforms. A competitor's reel goes viral. None of these are, in Epictetan terms, things that happen to you. They are things that happen, full stop. What you do with them is yours.

The creator economy is architecturally designed to collapse that gap. The notification arrives, the dopamine fires, the refresh begins before the thought has formed. Platform algorithms do not reward deliberation. They reward reaction. Every feature — the pull-to-refresh gesture that mimics a slot machine lever, the heart that lights up, the view counter that ticks upward — is engineered to make the gap between stimulus and response as close to zero as possible.

Marcus writes in Book VI of the Meditations: "You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." This is not a comfort. It is a diagnostic. If you are refreshing your analytics page seventeen times before noon, you have already surrendered the one faculty the Stoics considered inviolable.

Principle Two: The View from Above

Marcus had a contemplative practice scholars now call the view from above. He would mentally elevate himself — above the city, above the empire, above the earth itself — and observe the smallness of human striving from that altitude. It was not nihilism. It was proportion.

The Stoic practises amor fati — love of what is — which means seeing the work clearly, without the distortion that comes from measuring it exclusively in the currency the platform has decided matters.

Creator burnout, examined closely, is rarely exhaustion from making things. It is exhaustion from the continuous misalignment between what you value and what you are measured on. The view from above does not resolve that misalignment. It makes it visible, which is the precondition for resolving it yourself.


Principle Three: The Art of What Is in Your Control

Epictetus opens the Enchiridion with the division that organises everything: some things are in our power, some are not. In our power: judgment, intention, desire, what we pursue and what we avoid. Not in our power: the body, reputation, property, the responses of others.

Engagement metrics are, in the Stoic classification, entirely outside your control. You can influence them. You cannot control them. Publishing is not in your control. The work before publishing — the thinking, the structure, the honesty, the craft — is entirely in your control.

Here is where the platform's logic becomes philosophically corrosive: it trains creators to optimise obsessively for the uncontrollable while treating the controllable as merely instrumental. The question is no longer what do I actually have to say but what format, what length, what hook, what posting time will yield the outcome I cannot control. The cart is not just before the horse. The cart has been mistaken for the destination.
